What are some common types of headaches?

There are many different kinds of headaches, and here are some of the most common types:

      • Tension headaches or stress headaches
        • These are the most common, causing mild to moderate pain that comes and goes over time.
      • Migraines
        • These are recurring headaches described as throbbing or pulsing, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. About 12% of Americans get migraines.
      • Cluster headaches
        • The least common but most severe type of headaches, cluster headaches are described as a piercing pain behind the eyes. They tend to occur in groups, and 80% of sufferers are male, mostly between ages 20-50.

      What causes headaches?

Sometimes illness or infection can cause headaches, such as with sinus headaches, but chronic headaches are usually due to stress or environmental factors including:

      • Emotional stress
      • Changes in sleep patterns
      • Skipping meals
      • Dehydration
      • Eyestrain
      • Back or neck strain due to poor posture

There are also certain triggers like particular foods, noises, or lights that can stimulate or start headaches. No matter the type or cause of your headache, taking an over-the-counter pain reliever may not always do the trick and won’t have any long-term results. Chiropractic treatment can both provide relief and address the root cause of your headaches.

How can chiropractic treatment help with headaches?

Though sometimes the cause of headaches is unknown, many headaches are associated with muscle tension in your back or neck. Drs. Cooper at Synergy Medical LLC offer a variety of treatment plans that will address this muscle tension. Some of these might include:

      • Performing manipulations or adjustments to improve your spinal function and alleviate stress on your system
      • Providing nutritional information, lifestyle advice, and recommending changes in your diet such as adding certain vitamins or supplements
      • Coaching you on posture, ergonomics (postures for working), exercises for your neck and back, and relaxation techniques

Headaches are often overlooked or ignored as a part of daily life, but it’s important to take a look at what could be causing them, as there may be a simple solution. Are Migraines the same as headaches?

All migraines as classified as headaches but not all headaches are considered migraines. Tension headaches have a shorter duration and are typically less intense. Migraines usually have an aura or some indication that one is about to begin and can last for days.

      What causes migraines?

While the exact cause of your migraines may elude doctors, there can be several causation factors. They can be related to changes in blood pressure due to altered dilation/constriction of the blood vessels in the brain or from some other anomaly with the vascular system.

Another common cause is neurological in nature. Nerve pathways can be altered by pressure on your central nervous system and/or peripheral nerves. Chemical imbalance in the brain, a lack of sleep and some genetic predisposition can also play a role.

What treatments are available for migraines?

Based on the examination and imaging findings, our providers at Synergy Medical will develop a treatment plan that will reduce the pain intensity and duration through conservative methods that may include:

      • Exercise
      • Dietary supplements
      • Massage therapy and stretching
      • Intramuscular trigger point injections
      • Traction
      • Gentle Chiropractic adjustments
      • Lifestyle modifications (i.e. proper weight management, smoking cessation, etc)

How will I know if I have a migraine?

You may notice some of the following bodily changes in the hours or days prior to the onset of your migraine headache:

      • Frequent yawning
      • Bowel movement irregularity or constipation
      • Mood changes
      • Visual disturbances
      • Increased thirst and frequent urination
      • Neck or back stiffness
      • Extreme food cravings

      Do migraines have different stages?

The flashes of light, odd shapes or visual disturbances are common auras or warning signs that a migraine is coming on. Some sufferers even complain of temporary vision loss. When your migraine attack is in full swing, you may have a pulsation or throbbing pain in your head. It may be unilateral or bilateral and its common to feel nauseous and experience vomiting. Extreme sensitivity to odors, sounds, and touch is common as is dizziness or lightheadedness.
